Hair-A Natural History Of The Senses
Title: Hair's What We Do
A Natural History Of The Senses- Hair
"Lice have a hard time attaching to thick hair, which is why black school children don't succumb to epidemics of head lice as often as their white classmates"(86-87 Diane Ackerman).
The purpose of taking pictures of various individuals and focusing on their hair, ethnicity and personality, is so one can establish the fact that individuals are different and they are defined by different cultures, but they can be similar. For humans can identify with certain groups and cultures. However, some things are universal. Human suffering and human empathy is universal. Love is a universal concept that never changes, no matter what generation gap there is or how different people may be from one another. We all have the same wants and needs. Despite these points, our society has standards they expect everyone to uphold. The reason I choose the quote I did, from the book, is because our society looks down upon women who have course hair. If you are white, your hair is expected to be silky. women are told to alter their natural hair, to use relaxers(that chemically straighten their hair), in order to feel "pretty". The point of this project is to promote the idea that individuals in society, should express themselves however they want, not because society tells them to, but, because they want to.
A Natural History Of The Senses- The Skin Has eyes
"A mirror would mean nothing without touch"(95 Diane Ackerman).
The purpose of taking a picture of oneself in a raw state, and a picture all dolled up, is to address how one perceives themselves, For, how they alter their appearance, reflects on how they choose to express their identity. In the world we live in today, we place the Kardashians on a pedestal just based on how they look. The reason I chose the quote I did, from the book, is because the quote suggests that individuals care about how they look because they can see how they look and how others do. The mirror, does not have to be taken for a literal mirror, but to represent how when individuals get to caught up in anything, such as becoming vein, they lose sight of what is really important in life. Caring about how one looks and feeling confident is a wonderful thing that is sometimes given to those who use filters and makeup to extenuate beauty. The touch chapter is important because it is referring to a tangible state. How a person is inside is more important but society treats those who are above "average" looking, better. That is not fair. People should be treated based on who they are. If we are only referring to a tangible state, where we can only go off of appearance, overall it is important to be able to express who you are and your identity through your appearance preferences. Social media should not change how one feels about their body image or their looks, but unfortunately it has a tendency to do so. The expectations are not realistic for anyone to want to have. Long as everyone is comfortable in their own skin,no matter what preferences they have, that is all that should matter.
